Budding musician has the time of his life

GUITARIST Leon Blakey had the time of his life when he went to a Green Day concert in half term – and was plucked from the 13,000 strong crowd to play on stage with the band.

The 12-year-old Cedar student showed great professionalism and courage joining Billie Joe Armstrong and the band on stage at Leeds First Direct Arena – and even went home with a new instrument signed by the whole band.

“It was just insane – the best day of my life ever,” said Leon. “I was at the gig and they asked if anyone could play guitar. I put my hand up and some people nearby started pointing at me and I just think Billie Joe noticed me.”

As a massive Green Day fan, the young musician needed no help playing the song – a cover of the 1990 song Knowledge. He said: “Billie Joe was trying to show me the chords, but I was like ‘I know, I know them’ and he just laughed.”

Leon is in a band with two school friends, who performed at the Academy’s own concert in aid of the Children of Aleppo.
